Day 2 at the Big East Tournament
Today's action: (8) Georgetown 69, (9) South Florida 49; (5) Marquette 57, (13) St. John’s 55; (7) Notre Dame 68, (10) Seton Hall 56; (11) Cincinnati 69, (6) Louisville 66.
In Day 2 at the Big East tournament, three out of the four teams coming off byes won their games. No. 8 Georgetown started out the day by dashing No. 9 South Florida’s NCAA tournament hopes, defeating them 69-49. The Hoyas’ zone defense gave up no easy shots to South Florida and All Big East player Dominique Jones. Greg Monroe and Jason Clark led the way for Georgetown with 16 points each. The next game was a thriller between No. 5 Marquette and No. 13 St. Johns. Lazar Hayward, who had 20 points, helped the Golden Eagles jump out to a sizeable first half lead, but the Red Storm came back to take the lead late in the game. However, Marquette’s David Cubillan made a 3-pointer with 1:11 remaining to give Marquette a 55-53 lead, which they did not relinquish.
In the nightcap, No. 7 Notre Dame shattered No. 10 Seton Hall’s tournament chances, winning 68-56. Banged-up Luke Harangody stole the show off the Irish bench with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Notre Dame’s recent defensive success continued as they contained a Seton Hall attack that scored 109 points in their first round game. They will now take on No. 2 Pitt in the quarterfinals. In the final matchup of Day 2, No. 11 Cincinnati upset No. 6 Louisville 69-66. Louisville dominated the first half, but Cincinnati came back through 20 offensive rebounds. Down 69-66, Louisville’s Edgar Sosa, who had 28 points, had an opportunity to tie the game, but he was stripped of the ball.
